What are soapnuts?
Soap nuts are known worldwide by many names such as soapnuts, soapberry, Reetha (Hindi), Chinese soapberry and many more. Very simply, soap nuts are the dried shells or husks from the soapberry.
There are many kinds of shells that have saponin (chestnut is one). However the sapindus (soapnut) trees have an abundance. There are actually ten varieties of sapindus, but we only sell sapindus mukurossi, because these yield the most saponin (soap) when mixed with water. In nature saponin is a mild insecticide and anti-bacterial compound, it is used to repel bugs and fungus from tress naturally!
These amazing little berry shells of the soap nut berry tree contain soap (saponin) which we can use to clean not only our clothes but vegetables, kitchens, pets and much more!...

How do you use soapnuts in your laundry?
So how does it work? The soap nut shells release saponin (soap) when it comes in contact with water. They break down the surface tension of the water and oil in the wash reducing the surface tension of the water aiding it in freeing dirt, grime and oils from clothes. Essentially this is how chemical detergents clean our clothes...but now you can do it without chemicals!
Using washbag and soap nut shells: Put 5-8 whole shells (or equivalent half shells) into the muslin washbag, tie bag securely and place in a glass of hot tap water for 3 minutes. Then place amongst clothes in the washing machine drum. You can use more shells if you live in a hard water area. For dirtier loads we suggest doing a 3/4 drum load or even a half load depending on how dirty the wash is.

Soapnut Testimonials...
“…Hi, Yes we have been using the soap nuts in conjunction with essential oils for fragrance, in fact the nuts seem to condition as well as clean the clothes. They seem more effective than the previous detergents and they have handled some tough grime, as I’ve been working on some really dirty oily vehicles. We are going to use the suggestions you sent for other uses, but so far have not, however I feel more determined to recycle my grey water into the garden stock than ever. We will be buying more from you in the future, Many thanks friend!! Colin and Nic x…” To read more testimonials click here
